Wegovy is made by the pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk and contains the active ingredient semaglutide. Wegovy was cleared for weight loss management by the FDA in 2021, and is a prescription drug used with exercise and a low-calorie diet for long-term weight loss. It is used by adults who have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, obesity, or a BMI of 27 or higher, and a health condition that’s related to weight.
Wegovy’s main ingredients is semaglutide and is included in a group of drugs called glucagon-like peptides-1 receptor agonists. Wegovy works with long-term weight loss by regulating your body’s appetite and the number of calories you consume.
The side effects of Wegovy depend on your age, health conditions, and other medication you take. Most side effects are mild and may include burping, diarrhea, dizziness, gas, headaches, fatigue, stomach flu, constipation, or vomiting. These side effects may go away within a few days to a couple of weeks, but if you cannot control these side effects, talk to your provider.
Wegovy’s recommended dosage for weight loss and management is 0.25 mg once a week. Your dosage may slowly increase as you lose weight. In studies, most people lost at least 10% of their body weight during the first period. This period depends on your health, your dosage, and our provider’s suggestions.
